Hot Canyon Fire Update
Location: Elko County, Nev. 10 miles northwest of Montello
Size & Containment: estimated at 12,405 acres & 15% contained.

Fuels: pinyon, juniper, sagebrush, and grass
Fire Behavior: Exhibiting active fire behavior, with running, torching, and wind-driven runs. Yesterdays winds moved the fire downslope on the southern edge.
Objective: Full suppression strategy using direct and indirect tactics, utilizing ground and aviation resources. Keep fire from threatening structures, minimize amount of greater sage-grouse habitat burned. Keep fire from threatening important winter
hay stored east of the fire.
Fire Weather Risk: Sunny, temperatures in the low 80s on Friday, with daytime humidity around 16%, NW winds 15 mph. A warming trend develops over the weekend, with temperatures climbing into the high 90s and N-NW winds 10 mph, gusts 15-25 mph. Dry conditions
prevail and increasing temperatures combined with low humidity could lead to extreme rates of spread. Moderate risk of heat-related illnesses into the weekend and next week at lower elevations. Good humidity recovery at night to slightly more than 50%.
